History Storia

The Vermont Italian Club is a non-profit organization with a mission of discussing, learning, sharing and celebrating the cultural heritage of Italy and Italian-Americans. Our club  brings to the Vermont community educational and other events and activities that foster an intimacy with Italy through the people who love her. Whether through travel to Italy, the study of the Italian language, or through the love of Italian film, art or literature, or food/cooking, the club members share their experiences through a variety of club activities.

The Club was established in the fall of 1983 as the Vermont Italian Cultural Association by a group of Italian Americans, newcomers to Burlington, Vermont, who were drawn to each other via their Italian roots.  The first president of the organization and the person most influential in establishing the organization was Dr. Kenneth Ciongoli, former Chairman of the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), former President of the Neurological Associates of Vermont and Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine (UVM) and "Kenny" of American Bandstand.

Burlington, Vermont, where the club is centered, once had a “Little Italy” section as well as the more well-known Italian communities in Barre and Rutland. Many of the Italian homes and businesses that constituted a large tract of downtown Burlington in the area of Battery and Pearl streets were replaced in the urban renewal projects of the 1950’s and 1960’s, and “Little Italy” gradually gave way to 'urban renewal.'  Today's VIC seeks to revive the spirit of that Italian populace and honor their contributions to Burlington, the Queen City.
