2016 Events
In addition to special events during the year we continue to schedule an Efifania (Epiphany) dinner in January, periodic Sunday afternoon coffees at Juniors in Colchester and occasional pizza nights at Barrio's Pizza in Burlington. In the summer we have several bocce socials where members and their guests are invited to play and/or learn bocce.

October
Carving out a day in Barre
On October 26th a group of hardy VICA lovers of stone, stonework, and sculpture braved a day that started cold and rainy. It was an historical, emotional, artistic, and inspiring experience. The group visited the Vermont Historical Society and the outside works of early and current Barre artisans. They then visited Studio Place Arts where they met the artist himself and had a private, guided tour of the current exhibit. At the Vermont Granite Museum the Director shared his vision for the future. After an indoor picnic at the Old Labor Hall the group visited the Italian-American Stonecutter statue. A quick visit to the granite quarries was followed by the last stop - historic Hope Cemetery – a location long used by artisans as a sculpture garden. Everyone attending agreed it was a wonderful day.
April
Olives and Oranges: Growing a Mafia Free Sicily
On April 23rd Weybridge resident Grace Weber presented a slide show and talk at the
South Burlington Community Library on her experiences as a volunteer in Sicily. She described her experiences as a volunteer with Libera, an anti-mafia organization dedicated to returning mafia-confiscated property to public use. Last summer she volunteered with Libera, cleaning up orange groves torched by the mob three years ago. The library community room was filled with members and friends who enjoyed her talk and had many questions for her afterwards.

March
Walking in the Footsteps of George Perkins Marsh
VIC and the UVM Dept. of Romance Languages cosponsored a talk about George Perkins Marsh, given by John C. Elder, Professor Emeritus, Middlebury College. Marsh, a Vermonter, was America's first minister to the new nation of Italy from 1861 to 1882. Marsh is considered by some to be America's first environmentalist and a powerful advocate of the sustainability concept.
An appreciative audience of VIC members and friends, along with UVM faculty and colleagues gathered to hear Professor Elder deliver an engaging book talk followed by a lively question and answer session.

A visit to the studio of sculptor Richard Erdman
Volantino by Richard Erdman
On February 7th a group of 20 VICA members and guests were warmly welcomed into the Williston design studio of Vermonter Richard Erdman, an internationally acclaimed sculptor who creates soaring, monumental works in marble and bronze. They were able to see and touch a number of small finished pieces as well as the models for full-scale works. Many had visited Richard’s website, www.richarderdman.com, where his story and the stories of a number of the works he has created are told. Richard divides his time between his design studio in Williston and his sculpting studio near Carrara, Italy.
